We have a large pre-school room where we plan more in-depth activities for our older children and this is designed to ease the transition to more formal school education; basic maths, music, language and literacy, computer and writing skills are all actively encouraged.
We have excellent pre-school staff that are fully trained in pre-school education. For example, for literacy we use a system called ‘jolly phonics’ which is a fun and child centred approach to teaching. The education is play based and we feel there is nothing like the sight and sound of a happy laughing child who is also learning at the same time.
The other activities planned are based around the child’s level of confidence, ability and individuality. Independence of choice is also encouraged and children are able to select their own play activities from toys that are stored at child level, select their own choice of computer programmes, encouraged to count cups and plates required for snack time, encouraged to cut their own fruit and generally grow in confidence in their own abilities and skills. We offer constant praise to the children as we know it makes them happy and instils them with the confidence to grow stronger as individuals.
The Early Years Foundation stage is a record of how children progress, develop, learn and grow from birth through their Early Years. We use this tool to follow, plan, document, assess and further develop each individual child in our care. Each child has a key worker who is responsible for your child’s learning and development. Your child has its own record of achievement folder which contains evidence of your child’s achievements and successes over a period of time. It is available to be passed on to your child’s first school or as a keepsake for you. Your child’s record of achievement is available for you to see at any time. Each child has a key worker who will discuss the content with you at our regular parent’s evenings.
