There are a number of childcare voucher schemes currently in operation and these are a preferred means of payment for many parents as there are significant savings to be made on Income Tax and National Insurance contributions. Basically, parents can choose to accept vouchers, up to a maximum of £243 per month, instead of an equivalent salary and by doing this the voucher amount becomes Income Tax and National Insurance free. For the basic rate tax payer this means a potential saving of £962 per year and for the higher rate tax payer a potential saving of £1195 per year. Both working parents are eligible to receive the vouchers so joint savings of up to £2390 are possible. To use any of the voucher schemes you will need to find out whether your employer is associated with one of the scheme operators.
